Private Combined ADHD & Autism Assessment in Hertfordshire

If both ADHD and autism are suspected, the NHS pathway in Hertfordshire can mean navigating separate waiting lists for each condition, with neurodiversity referral waits already exceeding 36 months. At Bloom Clinical, our combined assessment evaluates both conditions together in a single, integrated process for adults and children with the whole process from referral, to gaining your full clinical report and diagnosis (if applicable), being around 8 weeks.

Children’s assessments are led by a Consultant Paediatrician and delivered by a specialist multidisciplinary team, including consultant occupational therapists with certification in Sensory Integration, using gold standard assessment tools, such as, the ADOS-2, QB Check Test, Ayres’ Structured Clinical Observations, Sensory Processing Measure, Brown Executive functioning and Conners 4. Every child’s assessment also includes a full sensory integration evaluation and motor coordination assessment as standard, by a clinical specialist. This can result multiple diagnostic profiles including ASD, ADHD, DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder)/Dyspraxia, Sensory processing challnges and Executive Functioning difficulties. Our reports are recognised by the NHS, schools, employers, local authorities, and EHCP panels across Hertfordshire and the wider UK.

Why Choose a Combined ADHD & Autism Assessment?

If you, or your child, are showing signs of both ADHD and autism, or you’re unsure which condition may be driving the difficulties, a combined assessment is often the most effective route to clarity for a full neurodevelopmental assessment

Research consistently shows a high degree of overlap between ADHD and autism. A meta-analysis of 63 studies found that around 40% of autistic individuals also meet the criteria for ADHD, with some clinical studies reporting rates as high as 50–70%. When both conditions are present, symptoms can mask or mimic each other; a child’s ADHD-related restlessness may overshadow social communication difficulties, or autism-related rigidity may be mistaken for oppositional behaviour in children or anxiety in adults. Assessing for both conditions simultaneously allows clinicians to see the full picture, reducing the risk of missed or inaccurate diagnoses.

The practical advantages of a combined approach

A combined assessment is more efficient and more cost-effective than pursuing separate ADHD and autism assessments individually. You receive a single, comprehensive report that details the full neurodevelopmental profile, covering attention, executive function, social communication, sensory processing, and (for children) motor coordination. For children, this is particularly valuable when applying for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), where panels expect robust, multi-faceted clinical evidence. For adults, it provides a complete understanding that informs workplace accommodations, access to support, and personal strategies.

At Bloom Clinical, every child’s combined assessment includes a full sensory integration evaluation conducted by certified Sensory Integration Practitioners, a component that most private providers in Hertfordshire do not offer as standard.

Could You or Your Child Benefit from a Combined Assessment?

A combined assessment is designed for people whose difficulties don’t fit neatly into one box, where attention, social communication, sensory experiences, and emotional regulation all seem to be involved.

Signs in children that may indicate both ADHD and autism

Consider a combined assessment for your child if they regularly show several of the following:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention, but also a tendency to become intensely absorbed in specific interests
  • Restlessness or impulsivity alongside a strong need for routine and predictability
  • Struggles with social relationships, finding it hard to read social cues, maintain friendships, or manage group dynamics
  • Sensory sensitivities, such as becoming overwhelmed by noise, textures, or busy environments, while also seeking out certain sensory experiences
  • Emotional dysregulation, frequent meltdowns, low frustration tolerance, or difficulty recovering from unexpected changes
  • Inconsistent academic performance, bright and capable in some areas, yet significantly underperforming in others
  • Difficulty with organisation and planning, paired with rigid or repetitive patterns of behaviour
  • Challenges following multi-step instructions or transitioning between activities

Signs in adults that may indicate both ADHD and autism

Many adults reach their 30s, 40s, or beyond before recognising that ADHD and autism may both be present. You might benefit from a combined assessment if you regularly experience:

  • Difficulty concentrating on tasks you find understimulating, combined with intense focus on specific interests to the exclusion of everything else
  • Feeling exhausted after social situations, while also struggling with impulsivity or speaking before thinking
  • A strong need for routine and predictability, paired with chronic disorganisation and poor time management
  • Sensory overload in busy or noisy environments, needing to withdraw or decompress, while also feeling restless or unable to sit still
  • Emotional dysregulation that doesn’t respond well to standard anxiety or depression treatments
  • A history of multiple partial diagnoses (anxiety, depression, personality disorder) that never quite explained everything
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or navigating workplace dynamics, despite wanting connection
  • Feeling fundamentally different from those around you, without being able to pinpoint a single reason

If several of these resonate, a combined assessment can provide the comprehensive understanding that individual assessments may miss.

What Happens During a Combined Assessment?

Our combined assessment process is thorough, compassionate, and designed to provide a complete understanding of strengths and needs. The process differs for children and adults, but both follow the same rigorous clinical standards.

Children’s Combined Assessment (Ages 5–18)

  1. Pre-assessment screening: You will complete psychometric questionnaires sent by email, including autism screening measures and Conners 4 ADHD rating scales. With your permission, we also send standardised clinical measures to your child’s school or education setting to gather observations from multiple environments.
  2. Clinical interview with parents/caregivers: A detailed online conversation with one of our specialist clinicians, exploring your child’s developmental history, current difficulties, daily functioning, and any previous concerns or assessments. Your child is not typically required for this session.
  3. In-clinic diagnostic assessment and observation: Your child attends our St Albans clinic for face-to-face assessment sessions using gold-standard diagnostic tools. This includes structured observational assessments for autism (ADOS-2), the QB Test and Conners 4 for ADHD, and a comprehensive sensory integration and motor coordination evaluation by our certified Sensory Integration Practitioners.
  4. Multidisciplinary clinical review: Our full team, led by a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in neurodevelopment, meets to analyse all findings collectively. The information is considered alongside DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to ensure a clinically robust outcome.
  5. Detailed written report: You receive a comprehensive report covering your child’s full neurodevelopmental profile, including diagnoses where criteria are met, clinical observations, and specific, evidence-based recommendations for home, school, and any further support or intervention. The report includes supporting letters for your GP, your child’s school, and can be used towards an EHCP application at no additional cost.

Adult Combined Assessment (Ages 18+)

  1. Pre-assessment screening: You will complete a short online form and psychometric questionnaires sent by email, covering both ADHD and autistic traits.
  2. Clinical interview: A structured conversation with one of our specialist clinicians covering your developmental history, social communication, attention and concentration, sensory experiences, daily routines, and any previous diagnoses or assessments. Where possible, we also gather information from someone who knew you as a child (a parent or close family member), though this is not always essential.
  3. Diagnostic assessment: Using validated, gold-standard tools for both ADHD and autism, in line with NICE guidelines. Adult combined assessments can be conducted face-to-face at our St Albans clinic or fully online, depending on your preference.
  4. Multidisciplinary clinical review: Our team of specialists meets to analyse all findings together, considering the information alongside DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for both ADHD and autism.
  5. Detailed written report: A comprehensive report covering your full neurodevelopmental profile, including diagnoses where criteria are met, clinical observations, and specific recommendations including workplace accommodations, strategies for daily life, and guidance on accessing further support.

The Bloom Model

Gold-Standard Diagnostic Tools

We use clinically validated, NICE-guideline-compliant tools to ensure the most accurate and fair assessment possible. Our combined assessment draws on:

For ADHD:

  • QB Test, a digital neuropsychological assessment measuring activity, attention, and impulse control using objective computer-based tasks (face-to-face for children aged 6+; available online for adults).
  • Conners 4, a widely used rating scale capturing ADHD symptoms and their functional impact across home, school/work, and clinical settings.

For autism:

  • ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), the internationally recognised gold-standard observational assessment for autism, involving structured and semi-structured social interaction tasks (used for all children’s assessments and, where clinically indicated, for adults).
  • DASI (Diagnostic Autism Spectrum Interview) The Diagnostic Autism Spectrum Interview (DASI) is a structured self or caregiver interview used as part of an autism assessment to gather detailed developmental and behavioural information.
  • Developmental History Interview
  • Autism-specific psychometric questionnaires

For sensory processing and motor coordination (children):

  • Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), assessing sensory integration across different environments.
  • Movement ABC / SIPT / Ayres’ Structured Clinical Observations, standardised tools evaluating fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance, and praxis.

Across all components:

  • Clinical interviews and detailed developmental history
  • Self-report and informant rating scales from parents, teachers, partners, or other key observers

Why Choose Bloom Clinical for Your Combined Assessment in Hertfordshire?

Consultant Paediatrician-Led (Children’s Assessments)

Every child’s combined assessment at Bloom Clinical is medically led by a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in neurodevelopment. This ensures fidelity to NICE guidelines and alignment with national standards for formal diagnosis. Many private providers use psychologist-led models; our paediatrician-led approach provides the medical oversight that some NHS services and EHCP panels specifically look for.

Specialist Multidisciplinary Team

Our assessments involve input from a team of qualified specialists, not just a single clinician. This includes clinical specialists in occupational therapy, sensory integration, and neurodevelopmental assessment, all registered with recognised professional bodies and holding relevant postgraduate qualifications.

Integrated Sensory Assessment as Standard

Every child’s combined assessment includes a full sensory integration evaluation conducted by certified Sensory Integration Practitioners. This is not an optional add-on; it is built into every assessment, providing families with tailored strategies to support everyday functioning and well-being.

Experienced in Complex Presentations

A combined assessment is inherently more complex than an individual ADHD or autism assessment. Our team has specific expertise in disentangling overlapping symptoms, identifying masking in girls and women, and recognising presentations that have previously been misattributed to anxiety, depression, or personality traits. We are experienced in assessing people of all ages and genders across the full range of ADHD and autism presentations.

Reports Recognised Across Hertfordshire and the UK

Our assessments follow NICE guidelines and are conducted by qualified professionals. Our reports are accepted by NHS services, GPs, CAMHS, schools, universities, employers, local authorities, and EHCP panels across Hertfordshire and throughout the UK.

For Children, EHCP Applications

Our reports are designed with EHCP applications in mind. They include the detailed clinical evidence that Hertfordshire panels expect, a full neurodevelopmental profile, an assessment of how your child’s needs affect their functioning at home and school, and clear, actionable recommendations for educational support.

Medication

If ADHD is diagnosed and you or your child would like to explore medication, we can discuss the available options and, where appropriate, provide a recommendation letter with evidence-based guidelines for treatment, which can be shared with your GP or paediatrician to initiate a shared care agreement.

For Children, School Support and Accommodations

Every report contains practical, evidence-based guidance for your child’s school, from sensory accommodations and social communication strategies to exam access arrangements and classroom adjustments. These recommendations are drawn directly from the assessment findings and tailored to your child’s specific strengths and needs, so schools know exactly what support to put in place.

For Adults, Workplace and University Accommodations

For adults, our reports include recommendations for reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. This may cover workplace accommodations, strategies for managing sensory environments, guidance for university disability services, or exam access arrangements for mature students.

FAQs

What's the difference between a combined assessment and having separate ADHD and autism assessments?

A combined assessment evaluates both ADHD and autism together in a single, integrated process. This is clinically advantageous because symptoms of ADHD and autism frequently overlap and can mask or mimic each other. Assessing both conditions simultaneously gives our team the full picture, reducing the risk of a missed or incomplete diagnosis. It’s also more practical and more cost-effective than pursuing two separate assessments, and produces a single comprehensive report, which is particularly useful for EHCP applications (for children) or workplace accommodation requests (for adults).

Our combined assessment is available for children aged 6–18 and for adults of any age. It is designed for anyone who shows signs of both ADHD and autism, or where there is uncertainty about which condition is driving their difficulties. Many adults who have previously been diagnosed with ADHD or autism alone find that a combined assessment reveals the fuller picture.

All in-person assessment sessions take place at our St Albans clinic (St Paul’s Church, Blandford Road, St Albans, AL1 4JP), with on-site and on-street parking available. The initial clinical interview with parents/caregivers (for children) is conducted online for convenience. Adult combined assessments can also be conducted fully online.

Our clinicians are experienced in working with children and young people. We create a warm, welcoming environment using age-appropriate language, visual supports, play-based approaches for younger children, regular breaks, and a pace that respects your child’s needs. Our goal is to make the experience as comfortable as possible for both your child and your family.

If the diagnostic criteria are met for ADHD but not autism (or vice versa), the report will detail the full findings and explain the clinical reasoning. You will still receive a comprehensive report with specific recommendations, and the assessment fee remains the same, you are paying for the thoroughness of the evaluation, not a specific outcome.

AuDHD is an informal term used by the neurodivergent community to describe someone who is both autistic and has ADHD. It is not a formal clinical term, but it reflects the growing recognition that these two conditions frequently co-occur and interact with each other in complex ways. Our combined assessment is specifically designed to identify and understand this overlap.
