Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)

Dyspraxia, and the umbrella diagnosis, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to plan and coordinate physical movements. It is not a sign of low intelligence or muscle weakness but rather a problem with motor coordination and the brain’s ability to send the right signals to the body.

People with dyspraxia may struggle with tasks that require fine motor skills, such as writing, tying shoelaces, using utensils; ocular-motor activities such as visual tracking, reading; as well as gross motor skills, like running, balancing, or playing sports.

While dyspraxia primarily impacts motor coordination, it can also affect other areas of life, including academic performance, social interactions, planning and organising and self-esteem. Early assessment and intervention are essential for helping individuals with dyspraxia manage their difficulties, improve their skills, and lead fulfilling lives.

Key Characteristics of developmental coordination disorder:

Motor Coordination Difficulties:

  • Fine motor difficulties: Struggles with tasks requiring small, precise movements such as writing, buttoning shirts, using scissors, or drawing.
  • Gross motor difficulties: Challenges with larger movements, such as running, jumping, balancing, or climbing stairs.
  • Difficulty with tasks that require both hand-eye coordination, such as catching a ball or pouring a drink without spilling.

Clumsiness and Poor Spatial Awareness:

  • Frequently bumping into things, difficulty navigating crowded spaces, or poor judgment of distances and space.
  • Difficulty with activities similar to walking in a straight line, catching or throwing a ball, or playing sports.
  • Tripping, falling, or dropping things frequently.

Problems with Organisation and Planning:

  • Difficulty organising tasks, following instructions, or keeping track of schedules.
  • Struggles with time management, prioritising tasks, and completing steps in an organised order.
  • Poor spatial orientation, such as difficulties knowing left from right, and difficulties with directional concepts such as up/down or near/far.

Speech and Language Difficulties:

  • Some individuals with dyspraxia experience speech difficulties, which may include problems with articulation, clarity, or the fluency of speech. This is sometimes referred to as verbal dyspraxia.
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts in a clear, structured manner.
 

Learning Difficulties:

  • Dyspraxia can affect cognitive abilities like memory, attention, and processing speed, making it harder for individuals to retain and process information.
  • Academic difficulties, particularly in subjects requiring fine motor skills (e.g., handwriting or drawing).
 

Social and Emotional Challenges:

  • Due to the difficulties in motor coordination and communication, individuals with dyspraxia may feel socially awkward or out of place, leading to feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety.
  • They may avoid activities like sports or social games due to fear of failure, leading to social isolation.
