Private Teenage ADHD Assessments

The Purpose of an ADHD Assessment

ADHD can significantly impact teenagers’ academic performance, social relationships, emotional wellbeing, and self-esteem during this formative period. Many families seek assessments when noticing recurring challenges such as difficulty focusing during lessons, inconsistent homework completion, disorganisation, emotional reactivity, or social struggles. Our comprehensive evaluations are designed to provide the clarity and direction needed to support your teenager through these crucial developmental years.

The Importance of an ADHD Assessment

An ADHD assessment is more than just confirming a diagnosis. It offers valuable insights into how ADHD specifically impacts your teenager’s learning style, social interactions, and emotional regulation. Understanding these patterns can unlock access to appropriate educational support, exam accommodations, and effective strategies that make a substantial difference in managing academic demands, building positive relationships, and developing crucial self-advocacy skills.

Sensory processing is a key focus in our evaluations, conducted by certified sensory integration practitioners. This helps identify sensory preferences and challenges, with tailored strategies provided to enhance classroom experiences, extracurricular participation, and overall wellbeing.

For teenagers, an assessment can bring tremendous relief and self-understanding, offering explanations for previous difficulties and empowering them to navigate adolescence with greater confidence and appropriate support.

Our ADHD assessments are designed to address the unique challenges facing teenagers (13-17), providing professional insights with respect, empathy, and a deep understanding of adolescent development.

What to Expect During an ADHD Assessment

The ADHD assessment process at Bloom Clinical begins with a detailed consultation to understand your concerns and gather a comprehensive developmental and educational history.

For teenagers, we gather information from multiple sources including parents/carers, the young person themselves, and with permission, their educational setting.

Our assessments utilise evidence-based tools and techniques to ensure a reliable and thorough diagnosis. The process typically includes:

  • Developmental and Educational History: Exploring patterns of attention, focus, and behaviour throughout childhood and secondary education.
  • Clinical Observations: Assessing attention, impulse control, and executive functioning in structured settings.
  • Input From Teachers: Gathering insights from educational professionals to understand classroom behaviour, learning patterns, and social interactions.
  • Standardised Testing: Using validated tools including the QB Test to evaluate ADHD symptoms and their impact on academic performance and social functioning.

Our multidisciplinary team combines clinical expertise with a warm and approachable manner, specialising in adolescent development. We understand that the assessment process can feel daunting for both teenagers and parents, and our goal is to make the experience as comfortable, respectful and supportive as possible.

More Information

1. Screening Information

The first step of our assessment process is to complete some screening information so that we can find out more about you and determine together if an assessment is the right next step. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask more about our assessments and let us know of any needs or preferences you may have. This can be done by telephone or via a referral form.

Completion of provided Adult ADHD Self Report Scale questionnaire (ASRS), The Conners-4, the Conners 4 is a modern version of the Conners Rating Scales, which were originally developed by Dr. C. Keith Conners. These scales are used to help diagnose ADHD and evaluate its severity. The Conners 4 is specifically designed to be more relevant and accurate for both children and adults. The Sensory Processing Measure assessment tool will be sent via online link for completion (if there are difficulties with this, a member of the team can call to go through the assessment and answers) as well as the interoception awareness questionnaire for completion.

We will talk with you online to explore your experiences regarding attention, concentration, hyperactivity, executive functioning, relationships and organising and planning.

For face-to-face assessments, we will use the QB Test. The QB Test is a digital neuropsychological assessment that uses a combination of visual and auditory tasks to measure key behavioural characteristics that are often linked to ADHD. It’s often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools, such as the Conners 4, clinical interviews, and self-report questionnaires. If preferred, the QB Test can be arranged to be conducted online.

Once all the assessments tools are complete, an MDT meeting will be held to review all the information gathered and analyse the results collectively. The information will be considered alongside the DSM-V diagnostic criteria to ensure a clinically robust diagnosis process.

You will receive a full, in-depth, clinically robust evaluation report. It will be important to take some time read, digest and carefully consider recommendations, at your own pace.
