Private ADHD Assessments Hertfordshire
Families and adults across Hertfordshire are facing waits of over 36 months for NHS neurodevelopmental assessments, with the local pathway split across multiple trusts and involving sequential waiting lists. At Bloom Clinical, we provide private ADHD assessments for adults (age 18+) and children (aged 6–18) at our St Albans clinic, delivering results typically within 8 weeks, without the need for a GP referral.
Every assessment uses gold-standard diagnostic tools (including the QB Test and Conners 4) and is undertaken by our specialist multidisciplinary team. Children’s assessments are led by a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in neurodevelopment. Our reports are accepted by GPs, NHS services, schools, employers, and EHCP panels across Hertfordshire and throughout the UK.

Could You or Your Child Have ADHD?
ADHD affects people differently depending on age, gender, and life circumstances. Many adults reach their 30s or 40s before receiving a diagnosis, often having spent years feeling overwhelmed, disorganised, or misunderstood. In children, ADHD is frequently mistaken for laziness, defiance, or simply being “behind”, when in reality, the child’s brain is wired differently, and they need the right support to thrive.
Recognising the signs is the first step towards getting that support.
Signs of ADHD in Adults
You might be living with undiagnosed ADHD if you regularly experience:
- Difficulty concentrating on tasks, especially ones you find less stimulating
- Poor time management, frequently running late or missing deadlines
- Impulsive decision-making or difficulty thinking before you act
- Restlessness, an inability to relax, or feeling constantly “on the go”
- Struggling to prioritise or organise your workload
- Forgetting appointments, commitments, or conversations
- Emotional dysregulation, low frustration tolerance or mood swings
- A long history of underachievement relative to your ability
- Starting many projects but rarely finishing them
- Difficulty sustaining attention in meetings, conversations, or when reading
ADHD in women is often underdiagnosed because it frequently presents as the inattentive type, less visible hyperactivity, but significant struggles with focus, organisation, and emotional regulation. Our team is experienced in recognising ADHD across all presentations.
Signs of ADHD in Children
In children, ADHD can present differently across age groups. Common signs include:
- Difficulty sitting still or staying quiet in class
- Acting impulsively without considering the consequences
- Short attention span, particularly for tasks they find uninteresting
- Frequent daydreaming or appearing not to listen
- Difficulty following multi-step instructions
- Struggles with friendships or social relationships
- Inconsistent academic performance, despite often being bright, the child may be underperforming
- Low frustration tolerance and emotional outbursts
- Frequently losing belongings, forgetting homework, or struggling with organisation
- Difficulty waiting their turn or constantly interrupting others
If several of these signs are present and have been ongoing for at least six months, an ADHD assessment can provide the clarity you need.
What Happens at an ADHD Assessment?
Our assessment process is thorough, compassionate, and built around you. Here’s what to expect from start to finish.
Children’s ADHD Assessment (Ages 6–18)
- Pre-assessment screening: You will complete psychometric questionnaires sent by email, including the Conners 4 rating scales and the Sensory Processing Measure. With your permission, we also send standardised measures to your child’s school or education setting to gather observations from multiple environments.
- Clinical interview with parents/caregivers: A detailed online conversation with one of our specialist clinicians, exploring your child’s developmental history, attention and concentration, hyperactivity, executive functioning, relationships, and daily functioning. Your child is not typically required for this session.
- In-clinic diagnostic assessment: Your child attends our St Albans clinic for a face-to-face assessment session using the QB Test, a digital neuropsychological assessment measuring activity, attention, and impulse control through objective computer-based tasks. Our clinicians also use structured observational assessment tools during this session.
- Multidisciplinary clinical review: Our full team, led by a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in neurodevelopment, meets to analyse all findings collectively. The information is considered alongside DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to ensure a clinically robust outcome.
- Detailed written report: You receive a comprehensive report with your child’s diagnosis (where criteria are met), clinical observations, and specific recommendations for home and school. The report includes a recommendations appendix with evidence-based guidelines for treatment options, including medication pathways. Supporting letters for your GP and your child’s school are included at no additional cost, and the report can be used towards an EHCP application.
All children’s ADHD assessments at Bloom Clinical include a full sensory processing evaluation conducted by certified Sensory Integration Practitioners, ensuring a holistic understanding of your child’s needs beyond attention and concentration alone.
Adult ADHD Assessment (Ages 18+)
- Pre-assessment screening: You will complete a short online form and psychometric questionnaires sent by email, including the Conners 4 self-report measures.
- Clinical interview: A structured conversation with one of our specialist clinicians covering your history, symptoms, day-to-day experiences, and any previous diagnoses or assessments.
- Diagnostic assessment: Using validated, gold-standard tools including the QB Test (available face-to-face at our St Albans clinic or online) and the Conners 4 rating scales.
- Multidisciplinary clinical review: Our team of specialists meets to analyse all findings together, ensuring your assessment is as accurate and thorough as possible.
- Detailed written report: A comprehensive report with your diagnosis, clinical observations, and specific recommendations, including workplace accommodations, strategies for daily life, and evidence-based guidance on treatment options, potentially including medication.

Gold-Standard Diagnostic Tools
We use clinically validated, NICE-guideline-compliant tools to ensure the most accurate and fair assessment possible. These include:
- QB Test, a digital neuropsychological assessment measuring activity, attention, and impulse control using objective computer-based tasks. The QB Test provides an objective, data-driven comparison of your attention and activity levels against age- and gender-matched norms. Available face-to-face for children aged 6 and over, and online for adults.
- Conners 4, a widely used rating scale capturing ADHD symptoms and their functional impact across home, school, and work settings. Versions are completed by the individual, parents/caregivers, and teachers to build a multi-perspective picture.
- Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), assessing sensory integration and interoceptive awareness (included in all children’s assessments).
- Clinical interviews, detailed, structured conversations with an experienced ADHD specialist, covering developmental history, current symptoms, and functional impact.
- Informant rating scales, completed by parents, teachers, partners, or other key observers to ensure a complete picture across multiple settings.
How long does the process take?
The full assessment process typically takes around 8 weeks from initial contact to report delivery. Each clinical session lasts approximately 1 hour.
Where are assessments held?
Our assessments take place at our clinic at St Paul’s Church, Blandford Road, St Albans, AL1 4JP, with a small car park on-site and on-street parking available nearby.
Adult ADHD assessments can also be conducted fully online if you prefer. Children’s assessments require an in-person appointment.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact us directly; no GP referral is needed. Simply complete our short form or call us on 01727 530247 to begin.
Why Choose Bloom Clinical for Your ADHD Assessment in Hertfordshire?
Face-to-Face Clinic in Hertfordshire
Unlike some national providers who offer “Hertfordshire ADHD assessments” that are actually conducted entirely online, Bloom Clinical has a physical location in St Albans where you or your child can be assessed in person. Face-to-face assessment is essential for children, and the QB Test, which measures physical activity and movement alongside attention, is most accurate when conducted in a controlled clinical environment.
Consultant Paediatrician-Led (Children’s Assessments)
Every child’s ADHD assessment at Bloom Clinical is medically led by a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in neurodevelopment. This provides the clinical oversight that many NHS services, GPs, and EHCP panels specifically look for when considering shared care agreements and educational support.
Specialist Multidisciplinary Team
Every assessment involves input from a team of qualified specialists, not just a single clinician. Our assessors are registered with recognised professional bodies and hold relevant postgraduate qualifications in neurodevelopmental assessment.
Integrated Sensory Assessment as Standard
Every child’s ADHD assessment includes a full sensory processing evaluation conducted by certified Sensory Integration Practitioners. Sensory processing difficulties frequently co-occur with ADHD and can significantly affect a child’s behaviour, attention, and emotional regulation. Including this in every assessment ensures nothing is missed.
ADHD in Women and Girls
ADHD is frequently underdiagnosed in women and girls because it often presents as the inattentive type, less disruptive but equally debilitating. Our team has specific experience in identifying ADHD across all presentations, including individuals whose symptoms have previously been attributed to anxiety, depression, or personality traits.
Reports Recognised Across Hertfordshire and the UK
Our reports are accepted by NHS services, GPs, CAMHS, schools, universities, employers, local authorities, and EHCP panels across Hertfordshire and throughout the UK.

FAQs
Where do the assessments take place?
All assessment sessions take place at our clinic at St Paul’s Church, Blandford Road, St Albans, AL1 4JP, with on-site and on-street parking available. Adult assessments can also be conducted fully online.
Is there somewhere to park?
Yes. St Paul’s Church has a small car park on-site and on-street parking is available nearby.
How long does the ADHD assessment process take?
The full process typically takes around 8 weeks from initial contact to report delivery. Each clinical session lasts approximately 1 hour.
At what age can children be assessed for ADHD?
Our children’s ADHD assessments are designed for children aged 6 to 18. If your child is younger than 6, please contact us directly to discuss whether an assessment may be appropriate.
How is the assessment process made child-friendly?
We create a warm, welcoming environment using age-appropriate language, visual supports, and regular check-ins. The QB Test is a computer-based task that most children find engaging. Our clinicians are experienced in working with young people and take a play-informed approach, incorporating your child’s interests where possible and providing breaks as needed.
Can I have an online assessment instead of face-to-face?
For adults, yes, our ADHD assessments can be conducted fully online, including the QB Test. Children’s assessments require an in-person appointment at our St Albans clinic to ensure the most accurate results.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact us directly, no GP referral is needed. Simply complete our short screening form or call us on 01727 530247 to begin.
Will my assessment be accepted by the NHS and my GP?
Yes. Our assessments follow NICE guidelines and are conducted by qualified clinicians. Children’s assessments are led by a Consultant Paediatrician. Our reports are recognised by NHS services, GPs, and other healthcare providers across Hertfordshire and the UK. If ADHD is diagnosed and medication is recommended, we can liaise with your GP regarding a shared care agreement.
What diagnostic tools do you use?
We use gold-standard diagnostic tools in line with NICE guidelines, including the QB Test (a digital neuropsychological assessment measuring attention, activity, and impulse control), the Conners 4 rating scales, clinical interviews, and informant rating scales from parents, teachers, or partners. Children’s assessments also include a Sensory Processing Measure.
What's the difference between your ADHD assessment and a combined ADHD & autism assessment?
Our standalone ADHD assessment focuses specifically on attention, concentration, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and executive functioning. If you suspect your child may also be autistic, for example, if they also show differences in social communication, sensory processing, or a strong need for routine, our combined assessment evaluates both conditions together. This is more clinically accurate, as ADHD and autism symptoms can mask each other, and more cost-effective than pursuing two separate assessments.
Can the assessment help with an EHCP application?
Yes. Our reports provide the clinical evidence required for Education, Health and Care Plan applications in Hertfordshire and across England. They cover your child’s neurodevelopmental profile, functional impact across settings, and specific recommendations for educational support.
Can the assessment lead to medication?
We do not prescribe medication directly. However, if ADHD is diagnosed, your report will include a recommendations appendix with evidence-based guidelines for treatment options, including medication. We can liaise with your GP to support a shared care agreement for ongoing prescription management.
Do you assess ADHD in women and girls?
Yes. ADHD is frequently underdiagnosed in women and girls because it often presents as the predominantly inattentive type, less visibly hyperactive but equally impactful. Our team has specific experience in identifying ADHD across all presentations, including in individuals who have previously been told their difficulties are “just anxiety” or a personality trait.
What happens if ADHD is not diagnosed?
If the assessment concludes that you or your child does not meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, you will still receive a comprehensive report detailing the full findings, clinical reasoning, and recommendations for any other areas of difficulty identified. The assessment fee remains the same.
